Indonesia has 27 Percent Pharmaceutical Market Share in ASEAN

TEMPO.COJakarta – Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto said the national pharmaceutical industry continues to show positive performances. According to Airlangga, the market value of Indonesia’s pharmaceutical products has reached US$4.7 billion.

“It is equivalent to 27 percent of the total market in ASEAN,” Airlangga said in an e-mail yesterday.

When attending the 60th anniversary of Bayer’s operations in Indonesia in Cimanggis, Depok, Airlangga said the national industry provides 70 percent of the country’s medicinal needs.

In the chemical, pharmaceutical and traditional medicine industries, the sector grew 7.38 percent in the second quarter this year.

The minister hopes that the domestic pharmaceutical industry can dominate local and export markets, especially now that the government is improving the public’s access to health services, which requires large quantities of medicine and drugs, especially generic types.

The Ministry’s record shows that the pharmaceutical industry contributes Rp54.4 trillion to the GDP and employs more than 40,000 workers.

Bayer Indonesia’s general manager Angel-Michael Evangelista said the company has spent Rp1.6 trillion since last year to improve the quality and production capacity of its factories.

Bayer’s healthcare plant in Cimanggis is one of five health care manufacturing facilities in the world. “Through this plant, Bayer has exported 75 percent of its health products to 31 countries,” he said.
