Brunei: CPI fell by 0.1pc year-on-year in November 2019

The CPI in November 2019 decreased by 0.1 per cent year-on-year compared to November 2018. Prices of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages recorded a decrease of 0.6 per cent. Meanwhile, Non-Food recorded an increase of 0.04 per cent, according to the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (DEPS).

The CPI decrease was largely attributed to decreases in the prices and cost of Transport (four per cent); Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (1.6 per cent); and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (0.6 per cent). However, this was moderated by increases in the prices and costs of Restaurants and Hotels (5.1 per cent); Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (2.4 per cent) and Recreation and Culture (1.9 per cent).

Prices of Transport declined due to decreases in prices of motor cars and air tickets. Meanwhile, the decrease in the prices of Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels was due to decreases in rentals for housing, and materials for the maintenance and repair of the dwelling.

The decrease in Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages was due to decreases in prices of biscuits; fish; and fresh tropical fruits.

On a month-on-month basis, the CPI in November 2019 increased by 0.1 per cent compared to October 2019. Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Index increased by 0.05, while the Non-Food Index increased by 0.1 per cent.

The CPI is a measure of price changes of goods and services paid by the consumer in a specified period and compiled on a monthly basis. The list of goods and services in the CPI is based on the average expenditure per household from the Household Expenditure Survey (HES). The CPI full report for November 2019 is available from DEPS’s website: www.depd.gov.bn.
