Central banks of Cambodia, Laos discuss cooperation

The central banks of Cambodia and Laos yesterday agreed to strengthen cooperation to boost their banking sectors and train their workforce.

Speaking to reporters yesterday after the annual meeting between representatives of the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and the Bank of Lao PDR, NBC’ governor Chea Chanto said the two banking institutions agreed to work closely together to develop their economies and banking sectors.

“This year meeting held in Phnom Penh allowed leaders from both central banks to exchange ideas and experiences regarding the economy and the state of the banking sectors in both nations. We are seeking greater cooperation in 2019,” Mr Chanto said.

“I would like to thank Laos for their commitment to improving cooperation every year.

“Your presence here in Cambodia is important to strengthen and expand our cooperation and relationship,” Mr Chanto added.

Sonexay Sitphaxay, governor of the Bank of Lao PDR, said he was honoured to lead the delegation from Laos. “This is my first official visit to Cambodia as acting governor of the Bank of Lao PDR.

“Cambodia and Laos have a long history of cooperation. NBC and the Bank of Lao signed a memorandum of understanding in 2009, and both central banks have been exchanging skills and experiences since.

“I strongly believe that this meeting will yield the results that we expect,” he said.
