Cambodia, Thailand agree to cooperate on marine tourism

Cambodia and Thailand have agreed on marine tourism cooperation linking the tourism ports of the two countries, while Cambodia asked its Thai counterpart to open more border gates to facilitate the flow of tourists.

Under the agreement, inked during the 4th meeting of Cambodia-Thailand Working Group on Tourism Cooperation yesterday in Kampot province, both countries will cooperate on marine tourism linking Koh Samui of Surathany province, Thailand to the International Tourism Port of Kampot province, said Thong Rathsak, director-general of Tourism Development and International Cooperation.

The Kampot International Tourism Port construction is scheduled to commence in late 2019 or early of 2020, said the Ministry of Tourism.

“Cambodia’s opening of new border gates will facilitate the flow of tourists between the two countries.

“Provinces of Preah Vihear, Pursat, Uddor Meanchey, and other provinces share the border with Thailand. They have proposed to Thailand to open more border gates due to a remarkable increase in both domestic and foreign tourists,” Mr. Rathsak said.

The Thai side, led by Arrun Boonchai, permanent secretary of Ministry of Tourism and Sports accepted the Cambodian proposals to discuss on the opening of new border gates in the near future.

The meeting of the working group on cooperation in the tourism sector was held a day ahead of the second tourism ministers meeting between Cambodia and Thailand which is set to be held today at Kampot.
