Cambodia takes bite out of app market

People can now order food and drinks with their smartphone after a Cambodian-developed e-commerce application called Tesjor came into operation.

Logan Sean, chief operating officer of Pathmazing, that developed the Tesjor app, said the application allows customers a choice of either dining in or getting takeaways, along with the option of delivery at a specified time.

“Tesjor is suited for Cambodians because there is widespread use of smartphones in the country,” said Mr. Sean.

Pathmazing is a company registered with the ICT Federation of Cambodia and specializes in building apps for “everyday solutions ”.

“Most of apps have been developed by foreigners and are mostly related to social media and games, and none for everyday Cambodian solutions,” said Mr. Sean.

“Having seen that food and drinks are the main necessity for Cambodians and expatriates, Pathmazing came up with the Tesjor app which offers a wide range of services including food and drinks,” he added.

“By the end of this year, other services will include hotels, restaurants, transport and tour guides.

“We want to promote Cambodian tourism and we want Cambodian people to access these services easily to save time. That is why we developed the Tesjor app.”

Mr. Sean said consumers could use the Tesjor app to order meals and drinks from more than 70 restaurants in the capital, including at major franchises such as Domino’s Pizza, KFC, and Lotteria.

He added that Pathmazing partnered with Wing, Pay & GO, Acleda Bank, ABA, Visa and Mastercard to allow account holders to link their accounts with the app for every payment.

Eang Kamrang, director of the ICT industry department at the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, welcomed the Tesjor app, saying it is good to have this sort of application because it was developed by Cambodians.

However he said there was some concern about risks to consumers and buyers because there is no e-commerce law to protect them.

Commerce Minister Pan Sorasak said in November that an e-commerce law could be passed by the National Assembly as early as the middle of this year.
