Cambodia: Phnom Penh welcomes high-speed public Wi-Fi
Visitors and residents of Phnom Penh can now enjoy free Wi-Fi in selected parks around the city thanks to a project launched yesterday by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.
The government also unveiled a project to provide free Wi-Fi to schools in Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Speu.
Equipping the parks in Phnom Penh with Wi-Fi came at a cost of $400,000, which was funded with a grant from the Korean government, said Sok Puthyvuth, the Undersecretary of State and the Ministry of Posts.
The service is powered by Telecom Cambodia, a state-run corporation.
“Free Wi-Fi is now available in two parks in Phnom Penh: Samdach Hun Sen Park and Royal Palace Park,” explained Mr Puthyvuth. “We will consider another locations in the future, including Wat Phnom, the park in front of the Office of the Council of Ministers, and Wat Botum Park, as well as parks in other provinces.
“We are using GiGA internet, which offers speeds of 1,000 megabit per second (Mbps). This technology is from South Korea and will help us strengthen our ICT sector.”
He said 50,000 users will be able to connect simultaneously in each location, with each park having multiple access points.
Oh Nak Young, the Korean Ambassador to Cambodia, said the projects utilises the latest technology, which has been brought to the kingdom by a partnership of Telecom Cambodia and Korean Telecom, also known as KT Corporation.
“GiGA Wi-Fi is cutting-edge internet technology, and is now finally being used in Cambodia,” Mr Young said. “This project is important for the development of the country’s economy and its ICT sector.”
He said one of Korea’s goals as a development partner is to help Cambodia assume a key role within Asean, which it seeks to accomplish though technology exchanges, as well as through investments in IT and trade.
“The Korean government actively supports the country and urges Korean businesses to invest in Cambodia and help develop the local ICT sector to international standards.”
The second project unveiled yesterday, named ‘Digital Connectivity For Schools’, will initially cover three schools in two different provinces: Hun Sen Kampong Leng High School and Hun Sen Toul Khpos High School in Kampong Chhnang, and Ei Va Srong High School in Kampong Speu.
“We wanted to give students outside Phnom Penh a chance to use free Wi-Fi for academic purposes,” said Tram Iv Tek, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications.
