Cambodia: Local mobile applications expanding in all directions
Mobile phone applications are playing a crucial role in growing businesses nowadays. They allow businesses to provide access to their services at a single touch. You can book hotel rooms, book flights, order groceries, buy and sell things, or connect with service providers simply by using a well-designed app.
These are just some of the things you can do and more and more apps are becoming available. The list of things you can now do at the touch of a finger is almost endless.
Statistics show that the average person spends more than two hours a day on their mobile device, usually spending most of that time using mobile applications.
The importance of apps in Cambodia is becoming more and more prevalent. The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) and the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPTC) announced last week the news of them building a new distance
education app in partnership with mobile network provider Cellcard.
All students and teachers using Cellcard connections in Cambodia can enjoy cost-free access as they continue their, learning and teaching via their mobile phones.
One of the newest apps in Cambodia that has people talking is Mojob. This app connects local service providers with customers, allowing customers to choose from multiple verified merchants. This is the first of its kind in Cambodia, and if you are looking for someone to install some plumbing, repair some electrics, or even if you are just looking for a cleaner, then this is the app to download.
Founded in 2019, the Mojob app has come a long way from its humble beginnings in Sen Sok (Phnom Penh). When the company first started out, their passion for well-done jobs at the right price drove them to focus on building an app that allowed anyone the ability to book a local tradesperson for whatever their need.
Now the company has expanded to Siem Reap in the hope of building an even bigger network and providing more people with skilled workers in the know-how, as well as opening up opportunities for more people to find work.
Founder of Mojob, Elom Agbavitor said: “I had been looking for an electrician in Phnom Penh for 6 weeks before finding one that came to do the job. Unfortunately, as soon as he left, I realised that the electrics were broken again.
There was no way for him to come back and fix the problem without additional fees. At that precise moment, I realised that Cambodia needed a platform where users can book tradespeople and rate their performance before sharing the experience with others.”
It is no secret that the tech sector in Cambodia has been booming in recent years, especially in the capital. With its place in the heart of Southeast Asia, fast internet connectivity and a young, digitally savvy population, Cambodia is poised for rapid growth in the digital economy.
Camille Van Tornhout, head of business development at Mojob, went on to say: “The technology sector is up to date in Cambodia in my opinion. More and more foreign companies are choosing Cambodia to create and develop their platforms. Talent is very much present in Cambodia although it can be a challenge to find and keep local talent.”
Although different mobile apps are very popular, some don’t come without problems. Just last week the Ministry of Interior’s Anti-Cybercrimes Department warned the public about a phishing scam on the Telegram app which lures users to “‘make money fast” by clicking a link.
Department Director Lieutenant General Chea Pov said that a group of foreigners is behind the scam. A department statement said that the scammers lure victims to click on a link after posting a message: “Hi. I am earning from $100 to $150 on ‘myxfreelance.cc’. You need to log in via Telegram and do what is written on the site.”
That being said, the vast majority of apps are legitimate and do not contain any such scams.
With almost two-thirds of the population being under 30 and new talent popping up, it is inevitable that in this digital age more apps will be coming onto the market and when they make life easier, they are always going to be welcomed.
Apps are fast becoming an integral part of much of our daily lives, from booking a taxi to ordering a home-delivery meal.
Other apps that are also popular and trending in the Kingdom at the moment are TikTok, Instagram, Pleng and Mobile Legends.
