Brunei: CPI decreases by 0.3pc in January 2017: JPKE

CONSUMER Price Index (CPI) in January 2017 decreased by 0.3 per cent over December 2016. Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Index increased by 0.4 per cent while the Non-Food Index fell by 0.5 per cent.

The decrease in the overall CPI in January 2017 was due to lower prices of Transport (1.0 per cent); followed by Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (1.6 per cent); and Clothing and Footwear (2.1 per cent). These were due mainly due to lower prices of passenger transport by air, furniture and furnishings, household appliances as well as clothing materials.

Indexes that experienced increases were Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (0.4 per cent); Health (1.2 per cent); and Recreation and Culture (0.2 per cent).

Meanwhile, Education Index remained unchanged.

Compared to January 2016, the CPI for January 2017 has declined by 0.2 per cent. This was mainly attributed to the fall in Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (0.9 per cent); Restaurants and Hotels (1.1 per cent) as well as Clothing and Footwear (2.8 per cent).

CPI is a measure of price changes of goods and services paid by the consumer in a specified period and compiled on a monthly basis. The list of goods and services in the CPI is based on the average expenditure per household from the Household Expenditure Survey.
