Bank Indonesia pushes use of national payment gateway
Bank Indonesia is stepping up efforts to increase consumers’ use of the newly established national payment gateway (GPN), according to interbank network provider PT. Artajasa Pembayaran Elektronis.
Artajasa business director Anthoni Morris Morris said on Saturday that BI planned to carry out a number of programs in the second half of 2018, including the mass production and use of debit cards with the GPN logo in electronic data capture (EDC) terminals.
Another program aims to encourage the application of a QR code system and electronic bill and invoices payment and presentment (EBIPP), Anthoni said, as quoted by kontan.co.id.
Based on BI data up to June 30, 95 banks have been connected to two switching companies, as required by prevailing regulations. That number is up from only 49 banks in May.
According to BI records, five banks were not yet connected to at least two switching companies as of June 30.
Meanwhile, Artajasa president director Bayu Hanantasena said 60 banks had been connected to Artajasa’s switching facility. “With the introduction of the GPN system, switching companies are able to meet a number of requirements — technical, business- and compliance-related,” he added.
Meanwhile, Rintis Sejahtera executive vice president for marketing, Hermawan Tjandra, said his switching company would strengthen the GPN debit transaction process.
“We will cooperate with more banks to expand services and to [popularize] the utilization of the GPN system among customers,” he added.
According to BI data, 937,000 GPN debit cards have been printed and 497,000 of them have been issued to the public. (rfa/bbn)
