Singapore: Grab charges ahead even as it gears up for Go-Jek entry

Singapore-headquartered ride-hailing firm Grab may be synonymous with transport services, but the five-year-old business is steering its way towards bigger things, starting with food.

In an interview with The Straits Times yesterday, Grab Singapore head Lim Kell Jay said even though ride-hailing makes up 70 per cent to 80 per cent of its revenue, the food sector holds more promise.

“Food in general is quite attractive,” said Mr Lim. “When you look at what people in Singapore transact on the most, the top two categories are food and transport.

“Food is actually slightly ahead of transport. These are the two areas with the most promise.”

From today, Grab will offer courier services here, pitting itself against delivery providers such as DHL and Ninja Van to tap into the booming e-commerce sector.

GrabExpress, which is already in operation in Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, will start in eastern Singapore.

Offering Grab users door-to-door deliveries daily from 8am to 11pm, GrabExpress uses GrabFood’s fleet of motorcycles. It aims to expand its delivery network to include GrabCar and GrabTaxi drivers.
