President Xi to ink SEZ agreements during Myanmar visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to sign two agreements giving Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Rakhine State the green light during his planned visit to Myanmar late next week, deputy commerce minister U Aung Htoo said Thursday.

“There are seven agreements under the Framework Agreement for Kyaukphyu. Two will be signed,” he told the reporters in Nay Pyi Taw.

The Myanmar nor the Chinese government has not released details for President Xi’s expected visit on January 17-18. It will his first visit to Myanmar since 2009

The Framework Agreement for Kyaukphyu SEZ was signed in 2018. Environmental and social impact assessments have been conducted in the area. So far, there have been no further developments on the progress of the SEZ.

The agreements to be signed next week involve the construction of a deep sea port at the SEZ. Further agreements on the development of the industrial zones will take place later.

Myanmar and China will also sign MOUs for the export of cattle and crops during President Xi’s trip, said U Aung Htoo.
