The government says that it will work to ensure that food supplies are accessible to all levels of society during the Thingyan holidays even as the country tackles the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

This was announced by the National-Level Central Committee on Prevention, Control and Treatment of COVID-19 in a statement released on April 6.

The committee sail it will provide 8 pyi (about 20 litres) of rice, 50 tical (about 815 grammes) of cooking oil, 50 tical of salt, 1 viss (about 1.63 kilogrammes) of lentils, and 1 viss of onions for each household for people in the lower-income group.

The government’s says the effort to provide the food will begin April 10, with state and regional governments collaborating together with government departments, chambers of commerce, civil society organisations and volunteers on recording, packaging, transporting, and distributing to ensure there is no wastage, delay or corruption.

Also, Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) separately on April 6 announced that it will establish a K150 million fund to supply food to the lower-income group during COVID-19 pandemic.

The UMFCCI said many businesses have been badly affected by the economic slowdown caused by the pandemic so the jobs and incomes of many working-class people have suffered as a result. As such it is working with the governments to supply food for those most severely affected.

Additionally, the government’s announcement by April 6 stated that households will be exempted from paying for up to 150 units of  electricityuntil the end of April.

The World Bank is advising the governments of developing countries to ease credit to help households smooth their consumption and help firms survive the immediate shock.
