Myanmar: Foreign visitor arrivals in Mandalay up 25pc

Tourist arrivals in Mandalay Region increased by about 25 percent in 2016, and there are plans to attract more visitors, said U San Yu, deputy director general of the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism for upper Myanmar.

“Mandalay is the heart of tourism in Myanmar. Every tourist who comes to Myanmar visits Mandalay.

“In international guidebooks, Mandalay is listed as one of Myanmar’s four famous destinations,” he said.

The total number of foreign visitors in 2016 rose to 385,031, an almost 25 percent increase over 306,432 in 2015.

Of the foreigners who visited Mandalay, the Chinese made up the largest number, followed by the French, Thais and Germans.

“In nationwide tourist arrivals, the majority of tourists are Thais. But in Mandalay Region, the largest number of tourists is Chinese. Mandalay and China are closely related as many Chinese also came to Mandalay for business purposes,” said U San Yu.

His department has a master plan to increase foreign visitor arrivals this year, he said, adding that in January, 53,051 tourists visited Mandalay.
