The data is needed so that additional funds, if needed, can be allocated for those purposes under the interim budget between April 1 and September 30.

“Currently, we don’t have the exact data on the number of civil servants and their remuneration packages. Only the departments will have up-to-date data. After we collect all the data, we can calculate how much more is needed for the interim budget,” said Daw Nwe Nwe Win, Director General of the Budget Department under the MOPF.

In his Myanmar new year speech, President U Win Myint said civil servant pay will be raised by 10 percent for officer-level government employees and 20pc for non-officer level employees to be on par with the minimum wage increase K4,800.

Based on this, Union-level departments are expected to calculate the additional amount needed for employee remuneration during the six month period. The data must be submitted to the Budget Department by today.

After processing the data, the MOPF will seek Cabinet approval following which the ministry will commence paying the increased salaries. Should the ministry decide to start paying the revised salaries this month, funds from the six-month budget can be deployed for that purpose, said Daw Nwe Nwe Win.

She added that if the original funds submitted under the approved six-month budget is insufficient, Parliament must approve any additional funds allocated to the budget.
