Indonesia: Govt Calls For Tighter Policy on Online Ojek Enrollment System

TEMPO.COJakarta – Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi demanded applicators of the online-based motorbike taxi or online ojek, Gojek and Grab Indonesia, improve their driver enrollment system. Budi said that applicators must set new standards in the employment of driver-partners in a bid to beef up security.

“We will demand applicators create new standards of new driver registration,” said Budi at Seribu Rasa Restaurant, Menteng, Thursday, November 14.

According to the minister, ride-hailing companies must conduct a face-to-face interview as one of the registration requirements. So far, would-be drivers were not required to undergo an in-depth interview during the registration process.

Additionally, applicators are also obliged to ask drivers for a recommendation letter. By means, drivers willing to be a partner must possess a written recommendation from registered drivers.

“They also need to evaluate those who have joined in,” Budi added.

Budi Karya went on to say that his ministry would also urge applicators to impose stricter policy on the distribution of ojek attributes. He also assessed that monitoring drivers on social media are necessary.

Inputs on rigid regulations for the online ojek enrollment system are pushed in the wake of the bomb attack in Medan, North Sumatra last Wednesday, November 13. The police identified that the bomber donned ojek attributes in the act.

Budi Karya said he had contacted Gojek and Grab Indonesia right after the incident, and the talks for new regulations would be held intensively in the next two to three days. “We have discussed it with applicators since today. At least a recommendation can be fulfilled in no longer than the next three days,” he said.
