Indonesia: Government: No Changes in Electricity Tariffs until June 2017

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The government has decided not to change electricity tariffs for 12 customer categories, which has been adjusted just recently. The government assured that electricity tariffs will not increase until June 2017.

According to Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Regulation No. 18 of 2017 on Electricity Tariffs, the tariffs for the 12 customer categories will be adjusted every three months based on the Rupiah currency value against the US Dollar, inflation rate and Indonesian crude price (ICP).

Director General of Electricity of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Jarman, said that the State Electricity Company (PLN) decided not to increase electricity tariffs after evaluating the three indicators in the past three months.

“After meeting with PLN and Minister [Jonan] to calculate electricity tariff, [it is decided that tariffs] for April, May and June will not change,” Jarman said at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry office on Wednesday, March 22, 2017.

Jarman explained that based on the calculation, changes in the ICP, inflation rate, and Rupiah exchange rate can still be compensated with efficiency improvement measures by PLN.

Jarman added that the decision not to increase electricity tariffs was made to increase the competitiveness of the industry sector.
