Indonesia: Government Announces Economic Equality Policy

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution said that the government will issue policies to solve economic inequality, which include the provision of capital resources to the people.

“We already have the infrastructure, the industry. They help [achieve] growth. We have to compliment them to achieve equality that would support, provide capital resources to the people and give them chances,” Darmin said in Jakarta on Monday, March 27, 2017.

The former Bank Indonesia (BI) governor said that the policies to solve economic inequality will go hand in hand with various economic packages that have already been issued, aimed at achieving infrastructure and national industry growth.

Darmin explained that the policies to solve economic inequality will also regulate redistribution of land and agrarian reforms.

The government is committed to providing 12.7 million hectares of lands throughout the country to the people to develop plantation or horticulture industry.

Darmin added that the clusters of land will be managed by the people with five to 10 years concession rights.

President Joko Widodo earlier said that 12.7 million hectares of land will be provided to cooperatives and indigenous people, among others.

The President expressed that, having seen a decrease in the Gini ratio (a measure of statistical dispersion representing income or wealth distribution of a country’s resident), the government will continue to issue policies to reduce economic inequality.
